Hunting in Texas

The 31st of March 2005 found Canadian Caller heading down south to Coleman Texas to hunt Rio Grande turkeys with Beck and Mary Knox of the BK Ranch. It had been 5 years since we had hunted in Texas and we were looking forward to the challenges and rewards that awaited us. The BK ranch is different in some respects than other locations in Texas, as there are no electronic feeders at the ranch to facilitate a "sit and wait" hunt this would be an honest to goodness turkey hunt.

The weather was a nice change of pace from what we were experiencing in Ontario at the time, as we went from 32 degrees to 78 degrees very nice vacationing weather, but when you add in the 30-40 mph winds not very good hunting weather as the birds would have a hard time hearing our calling as well as we would have a hard time hearing the birds.

To make a long story short we were able to give two 22 lbs. + Texas longbeards rides back to Canada in the bed of the pick-up, one sported a double beard and the other bird was worthy of a trip to our taxidermist.

I would recommend the BK ranch to anyone who wants a chance to "hunt" turkeys in Texas and you could not ask for nicer people than the Knox's they can be reached at http://www.bkranchtexas.com/
